Journal #1 Loneliness

"Loneliness is the price we have to pay for being born in this modern age, so full of freedom, independence, and our own egotistical selves" (pg 30, Sensei)

Write about your thoughts on this quote...in what ways, for example, does social media in our time perhaps isolate people as much as it connects people? Does it augment our egotism? Are we "together" but "alone"?'


In my opinion, social media does indeed contribute much convenience for people to communicate; however, we should not neglect the adverse effect of isolating people to some extent. Although human create internet and social media to alleviate our loneliness, ironically, loneliness become a bigger issue, and social media become the primary cause of isolation. Social media is perceived initially as a tool that can connect and deepen the relationship and communication. In contrast, as we rely more on these tools than we should be, we isolate ourselves by forcing too much on social media. For instance, instead of directly talking to each other, people utilize social media at home or restaurant, avoiding real interaction with the real person right next to. Thus, rely too much on these tools can eventually exert a negative impact.
